Learning To Love Reading
Advice from Zabel (11)
from one dyslexic student to another

Just because you are dyslexic does not mean that you cannot read!
Quite the opposite, in fact I love reading!
How I fell in love with reading!
A dyslexia friendly font
I was able to download a dyslexia friendly font onto my e-book. It helped to stop the words moving on the page, made it easier to picture what was happening and even in the smallest font I found it very easy to read.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
The first book that got me hooked on reading! If you are beginning your journey, this is a great book for you! I started this in Year 3 when I was 7. The entire series is funny and they release a new book every 6 months or so! So you always have something to read, even if you manage to finish all of them.
What attracted you to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books (WK)?
When I first saw WK it jumped out from the other books, it had pop colours, crazy and funny pictures or cartoons. I picked up the book and I knew I was going to like it!
What age were you at the time?
I first discovered WK at roughly seven and because I liked the book series so much I had to continue reading it, I finished at 9 years old and sometimes if I see it I’ll pick it up and read it all over again!
Do you find that, as a dyslexic reader, you tend to re-read a lot of your old favourite books?
Yeah, I do, even though I had already read it, it is a great way to read. You don’t always have to challenge yourself, even if it’s good to do so, sometimes it’s nice to sit down and relax instead of your brain constantly racing.
If you could change one thing about the books in order to make them more ‘dyslexia friendly’ what would that be?
I would change it so that the print inside the pictures is BOLD and stands out so that people can actually see the writing.
Have you watched the movies and if so do you find that they are just as good as the books?
No way, I don’t say that often (I love TV) but there is something about comics, the funny pictures, the hilarious conversations between characters etc. But I would still watch the movie after the book!!
As someone who is in Year 6, what series would you recommend to kids of your age group and Do you recall when you first discovered this series and what your first impressions were?
Lord Of The Rings (LOTR), because it is an amazing story. I was probably in Y3 when I discovered it. I had just read The Hobbit, it was so good, amazing story build, amazing characters. But then I read LOTR and I thought the Hobbit was a baby book! LOTR is the best book I have ever read. You should totally read it.
You mentioned that you have enjoyed audio booking - can you explain why this is so good, particularly for the Lord of the Rings trilogy?
I think that The Lord of the Rings is a dense book containing so much imagination. Andy Serkis, the reader of The Lord of the Rings trilogy (for audio books) is very skilled, he had played Gollum in the most famous Lord of the Rings movie. He does all of the voices with such depth, and good timing. So you can still read the books, just with your ears!
When audio booking and reading - have you any bits of advice?
I would say that, audio booking and reading is really amazing for you, you are reading with your ears and understanding, but it is also good to read with your eyes. Immersion mode is also an option, if you want to listen and read but don’t know where you are, Immersion Mode is the way to go! The text is highlighted making it easy to read and follow along.
Can you offer some advice to someone who just does not enjoy reading? - a few words of encouragement.
I know people say read, read, read, and sadly their right, what they are not right in thinking that you should read history if you don’t like it, you should read what makes you happy it doesn’t have to be the hardest book in the world, as long as you say, “I want to read that.” Reading just before bed is a good idea, just don’t go to bed at 10 and read fo 5 minutes as that’s not helping you at all, make sure you take time when reading, to understand and take in all the good words, knowledge, and magic!!
